City Transportation Planners Seek Public Input on Bicycle Boulevard Expansion

City transportation planners are seeking public input to help guide the next steps to expanding Rochester’s network of bicycle boulevards – alternative routes for bicyclists who wish to avoid high-traffic streets with limited bicycle infrastructure.

Bicycle Boulevards are essentially residential streets that have been upgraded with traffic-calming devices to optimize bicycle and pedestrian safety and discourage non-local motorists from using them as shortcuts. They serve as suggested routes around high-traffic arterials that don’t have optimal levels of safe bicycle infrastructure.

The City’s Department of Environmental Services is moving forward with a plan to add 20 lane miles of bicycle boulevards to more than 100 lane miles of bicycle infrastructure that is already present on Rochester’s road network. Measures under consideration would impact every quadrant of the city and may include traffic circles, speed humps, medians, curb extensions, bike-activated beacons and/or signage.

Anyone interested in providing input on the proposed plan can participate in an online survey and/or attend an upcoming virtual public meeting.
