City of Rochester issued the following on Sep. 28
Roc the Riverway Weekend returns on October 3 – 4 to provide the community with a variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, along with a chance to experience and learn about the fascinating history and exciting future of the mighty Genesee River.
A perennial fall favorite, this year’s Roc the Riverway Weekend has been reformatted to provide fun and entertainment for residents in a Covid-friendly manner. An assortment of socially-distanced and self-guided hikes, paddles and rides will showcase the autumn splendor of the Genesee River corridor while providing a safe, family-friendly fall adventure in the heart of our city. Attendees will also receive an update on all of the exciting projects that are part of Phase I of the Roc the RiverWay initiative, an ambitious $50 million project sponsored by New York State and the City of Rochester to highlight and develop the wonderful assets associated with the river.
“The Genesee River has always been the lifeblood of the greater Rochester region,” said Mayor Lovely Warren. “From the abundant farms of the Genesee Valley, to the industrial heritage of the city, the Genesee River has defined who we are and how our community developed. The river originally served as a conduit and hunting grounds for Native American peoples and later as a river to freedom for escaping slaves. The falls of the Genesee River have powered countless industries and the construction of the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes Port connected Rochester to the rest of the world.”
“Unfortunately, for many years the river that sparked Rochester’s development was ignored and abused by its citizens,” Mayor Warren continued. “In 2018, the State joined with the City to bring to fruition a number of projects designed to highlight and improve this tremendous asset and make it accessible to the entire community. The City of Rochester is proud to once again celebrate Roc the Riverway Weekend, and join with our numerous community partners to celebrate the Genesee and its lasting legacy in our region. I invite everyone to get out and get some fresh air, forget about the challenges we face for a minute and experience the resplendent beauty, rich history and bright future of our city."
