Born in Rochester on August 14, 1916
Wellington Mara was born August 14, 1916, in Rochester, New York. He joined the New York Giants organization in 1937 as a team assistant. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He became team president in 1965 and co-owner in 1959. He shaped league policy on revenue sharing and helped guide the AFL–NFL merger. Under his leadership, the Giants won six NFL titles, including Super Bowls XXI and XXV. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997. His career with the Giants lasted until his death in 2005. Rochester marks the birth of a sports executive whose leadership influenced both his team and the NFL’s structure.
