Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act #CleanWaterACt50. Since 1972, Monroe County has completely overhauled the way we handle our waste and storm water, converting a patchwork of failing treatment plants to a state-of-the-art Water Resource Recovery operation. For example, did you know we have a 35-mile tunnel system to catch sewage that used to overflow into the Genesee River and Irondequoit Bay? It is because of this infrastructure investment made in our Pure Waters system, our drinking water resources are secure, and recreational activities like swimming and fishing are now possible without threat of disease.
