Joseph Morelle, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 25th district, has recently voiced his concerns on social media regarding several issues related to the Trump administration’s policies. Morelle, who succeeded Louise Slaughter in 2018 and has served in Congress since then, shared his thoughts through a series of tweets.
On May 9, 2025, Morelle expressed his views on President Trump’s economic policies by stating that “President Trump’s tariffs are crashing the economy—causing the already high cost of groceries and housing to go up.” He criticized the House GOP’s budget for exacerbating these issues by cutting programs such as Medicaid and food assistance. According to Morelle, these measures benefit only billionaires and large corporations.
Later that day, Morelle commented on the treatment of public servants under the Trump administration. He emphasized the importance of supporting civil servants who ensure government functionality by saying “While the Trump administration disregards the value of public service, it’s our responsibility to uplift these civil servants who make sure our government functions.” He affirmed his commitment to advocating for them in Congress.
On May 10, 2025, Morelle commemorated an important milestone for scientific advancement in America. He marked “the anniversary of the @NSF—75 years of advancing science, innovation, and discovery.” However, he also raised concerns about potential threats posed by funding cuts from President Trump’s administration. He urged renewed support for science to secure future progress.
Joseph Morelle was born in Utica, New York in 1957 and currently resides in Irondequoit. He holds a BA from State University of New York at Geneseo and served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 until his congressional election.
