Joseph Morelle, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district, has voiced his concerns about recent actions and proposals by the Trump administration through a series of tweets. His highlighted issues include budget cuts to essential programs, the use of critical social benefits as political leverage, and attacks on institutions fundamental to democracy.
On May 2, 2025, Morelle criticized the Trump administration’s budget proposal, stating, “The Trump administration’s latest budget proposal would eliminate the Head Start program, a cornerstone of early childhood development for nearly six decades.” He argued that this reflects an administration where “priorities lie—and it’s not with working families.”
A day later, Morelle addressed concerns over the Social Security program, stressing that seniors should not be affected by political disputes. On May 3, 2025, he tweeted, “Seniors earned their Social Security benefits, and they don’t deserve to have their livelihoods used as political bargaining chips.” He outlined his support for legislation such as the Social Security 2100 Act as a safeguard against such vulnerabilities.
Later that day, Morelle also raised alarm over the treatment of the press, emphasizing its importance as a public service. He tweeted on May 3, 2025, “Restricting and attacking the free press is a move straight out of the authoritarian regime playbook.” He asserted that these entities should not be manipulated for political gain.
Joseph Morelle, born in Utica, New York, in 1957, has represented New York’s 25th District in Congress since 2018, succeeding Louise Slaughter. Prior to this, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018 and currently resides in Irondequoit.
