Joseph Morelle, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, has been vocal on various issues through his social media platform. His recent tweets cover topics from honoring Capitol officers to military readiness and concerns over executive branch actions.
On May 14, 2025, Morelle expressed concern about the placement of a plaque dedicated to officers who responded on January 6th. He stated that “House Democrats demand the plaque honoring the officers who responded on January 6th & protected our U.S. Capitol be properly displayed—as the law states.” Morelle criticized Speaker and House Republicans for not appropriately honoring these individuals, mentioning that he saw the plaque in the Capitol basement collecting dust.
The following day, May 15, 2025, Morelle emphasized the importance of equipping military personnel to address global threats. He tweeted about a hearing with Appropriations Democrats, stating “As global threats evolve, it’s vital that our @USNavy and @USMC personnel are fully equipped to respond and protect our nation.” He invited followers to watch discussions on investments in safety and readiness.
Later that day, Morelle addressed an issue involving President Trump and the Library of Congress. He described it as both inappropriate and illegal for President Trump to attempt what he termed as hijacking. Morelle asserted that “President Trump is trying to hijack the Library of Congress. It’s not just inappropriate—it’s illegal.” He stressed that congressional authority should not be undermined by executive actions.
Joseph Morelle has been active in politics for several decades. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1991 until his congressional election in 2018. Born in Utica in 1957 and currently residing in Irondequoit, Morelle graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a BA in 1986.
