Joe Morelle, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, announced on July 22, 2025, that he has reintroduced a constitutional amendment aimed at ensuring presidents are held accountable under the law.
In a post made on July 22, 2025, Morelle stated, “Just over a year ago, SCOTUS handed down a disastrous ruling giving presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. Today, I reintroduced my constitutional amendment to make sure presidents are held accountable under the law.” He also shared a link for further reading in another post the same day: “Read more: https://t.co/8iGjYXUv8w”. Later that evening, Morelle reiterated his position by writing, “The President of the United States should be equal in the eyes of the law with every other American. My constitutional amendment would reverse the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to put the President beyond accountability.”
The Supreme Court decision referenced by Morelle was issued just over a year prior and granted presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution while in office. This ruling has sparked ongoing debate about executive accountability and separation of powers.
Joseph Morelle succeeded Louise Slaughter as representative for New York’s 25th district in 2018 after serving in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018. Born in Utica, New York in 1957 and currently residing in Irondequoit, Morelle graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo with a BA in 1986.
