Congressman Joe Morelle of New York’s 25th district, a vocal opponent of the SAVE Act, has taken to social media to express his criticisms and engage with constituents on this controversial piece of legislation. Morelle, who succeeded former Congress member Louise Slaughter in 2018, has actively represented his district on various legislative matters.

On April 9, 2025, Morelle posted a tweet stating, “The SAVE Act is voter suppression, plain and simple. This bill is another example of the Trump administration’s move towards authoritarianism.” He implies that the bill undermines democratic processes, aligning it with a broader critique against the Trump administration’s policies.

The following day, April 10, Morelle announced on Twitter, “This morning I’ll be leading the debate against the SAVE Act on the House Floor. Tune in.” This post indicates his active role in legislative debates concerning the bill.

Later the same day, Morelle invited the public to join him for a discussion alongside fellow legislator Terri Sewell on Instagram Live. He tweeted, “Join me on Instagram Live at 11:00 today with @RepTerriSewell to discuss the so-called SAVE Act and its impacts on American citizens.” This indicates an effort to involve constituents in understanding the potential impacts of the legislation.

Joseph Morelle has been a member of the U.S. Congress since 2018, after serving in the New York State Assembly for nearly three decades. Born in Utica, New York, in 1957 and currently residing in Irondequoit, Morelle holds a BA from the State University of New York at Geneseo which he received in 1986.
