Joseph Morelle, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, has been vocal on several key issues through his recent tweets. Morelle, who succeeded Louise Slaughter and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018, continues to address significant political topics.
On May 22, 2025, Morelle criticized a budget proposal passed by President Trump and House Republicans. He stated that it “slashes Medicaid, Medicare, and nutrition assistance programs over a trillion dollars and will eliminate health insurance coverage for 13 million Americans” (source).
Later the same day, Morelle expressed his discontent with the handling of a plaque honoring officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 riot. He remarked that despite President Trump’s incitement of a “deadly riot,” the plaque “sits forgotten in the basement.” He declared his intention to display a replica outside his office if Speaker Johnson does not (source).
In another tweet on May 22, Morelle announced his participation in filing an amicus brief alongside nearly 200 colleagues. This effort contributed to securing a decision against actions taken by the Trump administration. He emphasized his commitment to “fighting every day in Congress” and standing up for his community (source).
Joseph Morelle was born in Utica, New York in 1957 and currently resides in Irondequoit. A graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo with a BA earned in 1986, he remains active in legislative matters affecting his constituents.
