Joe Morelle, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, publicly criticized recent federal decisions in a series of tweets posted on July 30, 2025. Morelle addressed both national security and healthcare policy changes, expressing concern over their potential impacts.
In one tweet, Morelle commented on the Trump administration’s actions regarding Afghan nationals: “The Trump administration’s decision to shut down federal programs designed to resettle Afghan nationals who risked their lives to protect American troops is unconscionable.” (July 30, 2025).
He further warned about the broader implications of these policies for U.S. alliances and security: “This decision not only abandons our allies, it weakens our credibility and puts our future national security at risk.” (July 30, 2025).
Later that day, Morelle turned his attention to domestic policy, specifically criticizing proposed Republican budget measures: “The Republican budget will cause more than 15 million people to lose their health care and make health care costs skyrocket for millions more. I’m committed to stopping Trump’s Medicaid cuts, rebuilding our healthcare system, and ensuring every American has access to care.” (July 30, 2025).
Joseph Morelle has represented New York’s 25th district in Congress since succeeding Louise Slaughter in 2018. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 until his election to the House of Representatives. Born in Utica in 1957 and currently residing in Irondequoit, Morelle graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986.
