Joseph Morelle, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district, addressed the recent legislative developments surrounding the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum in a series of posts on his official Twitter account. The statements, made on May 22 and 23, 2026, highlight his opposition to amendments added by House Republicans and express concerns about the influence of former President Donald Trump.
In another post from the same day, he stated, “I led the defeat of Republicans’ partisan bill that would have handed Donald Trump unprecedented control over the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. Women’s history belongs to the American people—not Donald Trump and his loyal followers.”
On May 23, Morelle commented further, “The people of Rochester understand that the Trump Administration is only working to bring fear into the lives of everyday citizens in our country. We see the pattern, and we won’t stand for it.”
Joseph Morelle has represented New York’s 25th District in Congress since replacing Louise Slaughter in 2018. Before joining Congress, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018. Born in Utica in 1957 and currently residing in Irondequoit at age 65, Morelle earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Geneseo in 1986.
