Joseph Morelle, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, expressed his views on recent events through a series of tweets. Morelle, who succeeded Louise Slaughter and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018, has been vocal about various issues affecting the nation.
On May 22, 2025, Morelle addressed a violent incident at the Capital Jewish Museum. He stated, “I am horrified by the deadly attack at the Capital Jewish Museum last night. As we grieve this senseless act of violence, one truth is undeniable: no one should live in fear because of their faith.” This tweet highlights his condemnation of the attack and emphasizes the importance of religious freedom and safety.
In another tweet on the same day, Morelle reaffirmed his support for the Jewish community following the attack. He wrote, “In this tragic moment, we stand in steadfast solidarity with the Jewish community, mourning the lives lost and reaffirming our resolve to confront antisemitism—and all forms of hate—wherever they exist.” His message underscores solidarity with those affected and a commitment to combating hate.
Later that day, Morelle turned his attention to fiscal policy. He criticized a proposed bill that he claimed would burden taxpayers with significant debt while benefiting wealthy individuals. In his words: “The bill also saddles American taxpayers with $5 trillion in new debt. All to pay for the largest tax cut for millionaires and billionaires in our nation’s history. This is cruel, irresponsible, and un-American. I will do everything I can to fight to stop it.” Here, Morelle expressed strong opposition to what he perceives as unfair economic policies.
Joseph Morelle was born in Utica, New York in 1957 and currently resides in Irondequoit. He graduated from State University of New York at Geneseo in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
