Joe Morelle, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, publicly addressed the recent expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and its consequences in a series of posts on January 9, 2026.
In his first statement, Morelle said, “The rapid expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations has led to a reckless disregard for public safety. The killing of Renee Nicole Good is a heartbreaking tragedy that demands more than statements of regret.” This comment came amid ongoing debate about ICE activities and their impact on communities.
Morelle further disclosed his actions regarding the incident: “I authored a letter to Secretary Noem demanding the department take responsibility for the tragedy in Minnesota and work to restore the trust of the American People.” He called for accountability from Department of Homeland Security leadership.
He concluded with a call for systemic changes: “It demands answers, accountability, and immediate corrective action. DHS must ensure that no other family endures a loss like this.”
Joseph Morelle succeeded Louise Slaughter as representative for New York’s 25th district in 2018 after serving in the New York State Assembly from 1991 to 2018. Born in Utica, New York in 1957, he currently resides in Irondequoit. Morelle holds a Bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo.
