Joseph Morelle, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 25th district since 2018, has been vocal on several issues through his social media presence. On May 14, 2025, he addressed topics ranging from police funding to copyright authority.
In a tweet dated May 14, 2025, Morelle highlighted the significance of Police Week by honoring law enforcement officers who “work tirelessly to keep us safe.” He criticized former President Trump’s budget proposal for its potential impact on law enforcement funding, stating it would “cut law enforcement funding by billions of dollars.” Morelle emphasized his commitment to supporting police departments and securing resources necessary for community protection. “During #PoliceWeek, we honor the law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to keep us safe.”
Later that day, Morelle commented on the dismissal of the head of the Copyright Office by President Trump. He described this action as “a direct attack on Congressional authority and a clear-cut abuse of power.” The timing was notable as it followed the release of a report challenging Elon Musk’s views on copyright. Morelle asserted that this was not coincidental. “President Trump fired the head of the @CopyrightOffice—a direct attack on Congressional authority and a clear-cut abuse of power.”
In another tweet from May 14, Morelle mentioned introducing a resolution in honor of Police Week at Capitol Hill. This resolution directed the installation of a plaque by the U.S. Capitol to commemorate officers who protected the Capitol during January 6th events. He expressed disappointment with his Republican colleagues whom he accused of disrespecting these officers’ sacrifices. “In honor of Police Week here on Capitol Hill, I introduced a Resolution to direct the @uscapitol to install the plaque.”
Joseph Morelle has served in Congress since replacing Louise Slaughter in 2018 and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1991 until then.
